Heat Pump Repair in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland

Technician servicing a residential heat pump outdoor unit

Heat pumps are more complex than standalone furnaces or air conditioners. They operate in both heating and cooling modes with refrigerant cycle management, defrost controls, and reversing valves that many general HVAC technicians lack deep experience with. When your heat pump stops heating, stops cooling, freezes up, or runs constantly without reaching temperature, Eaton's Heating has the diagnostic expertise to find the actual cause and fix it. We provide same-day heat pump repair across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland from our Coquitlam base. Flat-rate service call, upfront pricing on all work, and CSA certified OEM parts backed by a six-month parts and labour warranty.

Common Heat Pump Problems We Diagnose and Fix

Vancouver's wet, mild winters and increasingly hot summers put unique demands on heat pump systems. During winter, defrost cycles run frequently, and when defrost controls fail, the outdoor unit can ice over completely and lose heating capacity. During summer, the system switches to cooling mode and faces the same capacitor, contactor, and refrigerant issues that affect standalone air conditioners. We regularly repair defrost control and sensor failures that cause outdoor unit icing, refrigerant leaks that reduce both heating and cooling output, and reversing valve faults that lock the system in one mode. We also fix compressor issues including hard starts and electrical failures, failed capacitors and contactors, thermostat communication problems and control board faults, and fan motor failures in indoor and outdoor units. When a major component like the compressor has failed on an older system, we provide honest guidance on whether repair or a new high-efficiency replacement is the smarter investment. We present both options with clear pricing and let you decide.

Why is my heat pump running but not heating?

Common causes include low refrigerant from a slow leak, a stuck reversing valve keeping the system in cooling mode, a failed defrost control allowing ice to block the outdoor coil, or a faulty sensor giving incorrect readings to the control board. We test for each during our flat-rate diagnostic and explain the cause and cost before starting any work.

Why is my heat pump frozen or covered in ice?

Light frost on the outdoor unit during winter is normal and should clear during defrost cycles. Heavy ice buildup that does not clear indicates a defrost control failure, low refrigerant, a blocked outdoor coil, or a fan motor problem. Turn the system off to prevent compressor damage and call for same-day service.

Should I repair or replace my heat pump?

If your heat pump is under 10 years old and the repair involves a standard component like a capacitor, contactor, or sensor, repair is typically the right choice. For systems over 12 to 15 years old, those with compressor failure, or those with chronic refrigerant leaks, a new high-efficiency system usually provides better value through improved performance and lower energy costs. We present both options with transparent pricing.

What heat pump brands do you repair?

We service all major heat pump brands including Mitsubishi, Daikin, Lennox, Carrier, Trane, Goodman, Bryant, Bosch, and Fujitsu. This includes ducted central heat pumps and ductless mini-split systems in single-zone and multi-zone configurations. As an authorized Trane dealer, we have specialized expertise with Trane systems.
