Central air adds two pieces to a house that already has a furnace: an outdoor unit that sits on a pad beside the house, and an indoor coil that sits on top of the furnace and uses the furnace blower to push cooled air through the same ducts that carry heat in winter. The two are joined by a line set, a pair of insulated copper lines, and by a control wire to the thermostat. That is why air conditioner installation in a ducted house is a smaller project than a furnace replacement, and why the assessment spends more time on the furnace and the ducts than on the outdoor unit. The assessment covers the furnace, the ducts, and the spot for the outdoor unit, and you get a written quote that names the equipment and the work.
Sizing is where a New Westminster installation is different from one in a newer suburb. A 1912 house in Queen's Park with 10-foot ceilings and original framing, a 1958 bungalow in The Heights, and a 2012 townhome in Queensborough each hold heat differently, and the temptation on the older houses is to put in a bigger unit to be safe. A unit that is too large cools the air quickly and shuts off before it has pulled the humidity out, so the house feels cool and damp at the same time and the unit starts and stops all afternoon. The indoor coil sits on your furnace and depends on its blower, so the age and condition of the furnace decide more about an AC installation than the outdoor unit does. A furnace from the last ten years, which is most of what we see in the West End rebuilds and the Queensborough and Victoria Hill townhomes, takes a coil without extra work in most cases. Its blower has the speed settings for cooling, and the coil cabinet fits above it. On a furnace over 20 years old, which is common under the houses in Queen's Park, Sapperton, and The Heights, the coil still fits in most cases, and the AC will work, but the assessment looks at whether the blower can move enough air for cooling and how much life the furnace has left.
When the furnace is near replacement, we quote the AC on its own and the AC with a new furnace, and let you choose. The reason to consider both at once is practical: the coil comes off and goes back on when a furnace is replaced, so a furnace done a year after the AC means paying for that work twice. A furnace done at the same time means one visit, one set of connections, and a variable-speed blower under the coil from the start, which is the setup that cools the upstairs bedrooms best. Yes, when it is sized right and the furnace blower can move the air. In a Moody Park or Heights house with bedrooms two floors above the furnace, the cooled air has the longest run to the rooms that need it most, which is why we size for the house rather than rounding up, and why a variable-speed blower makes a noticeable difference on the top floor. Partly closing the basement registers in summer helps on any system.
In most cases, yes. The coil cabinet needs its full height above the furnace and a blower that can be set to a cooling speed, and both are checked at the assessment. The one place it gets tight is a low-headroom basement in a Queen's Park or Sapperton house where the furnace already sits close to the joists.
