Most of the work of a gas fireplace was done when the house was built. The opening exists, the gas line is there, and the vent already runs to the outside. A new direct-vent unit goes into that opening, connects to the existing gas line, and vents through the existing path. Its faceplate covers the edge of the opening, so the finish around it stays exactly as it was. For a firebox that is still sound and just needs a better fire in it, we install 18-inch and 24-inch log sets, which drop into the existing unit and bring back a full, even flame at a fraction of the cost of a replacement.

Because the faceplate covers the edge, the surrounding finish is never cut, drilled, or disturbed, and there is no patching or repainting afterward. We choose the faceplate at the estimate, once the opening is measured.
That is also why we describe the job as a replacement into an existing opening. The fireplace, the gas connection, the venting connection, and the faceplate are our work, start to finish. The mantel, the hearth, and the wall around them are not part of the installation and stay as they are. Yes, if the firebox, the burner, and the valve are in good shape. An 18-inch or 24-inch log set replaces the worn logs and embers with a new set that gives a fuller, more even flame, and it is the right choice for the older inserts in Glenayre and College Park that still run well. If the firebox has rusted through or the valve is no longer made, a log set is money spent on a unit that is near the end, and we will tell you that at the estimate rather than sell you one.
