Willoughby's fireplaces are all getting old at the same time. Nearly every townhome and detached build from the Yorkson-era boom went in with a direct-vent gas fireplace as a standard feature, which means thousands of units aged 10 to 20 years are running on original components, and most have never been serviced since the builder handed over the keys. The failure list on those units is consistent: thermopiles too weak to hold the gas valve open, wall switches and remote receivers that stop working, circulation fans that rattle or die, and glass clouding over with white combustion film. None of it is expensive to fix when caught early, and all of it is predictable, which makes gas fireplace repair in these homes less detective work than knowing what fails at what age.
The rest of Langley's fireplace inventory is older, and its problems come from years of regular use. Walnut Grove homes from the late 80s and 90s run standing-pilot units and early inserts that have been lit every winter for three decades. Fireplace demand does not arrive evenly. It matters more than for any other appliance we service. In the shoulder months, next-day and often same-day is routine anywhere in Langley City or the Township. That combination points at the millivolt chain. The pilot flame heats a thermopile, the thermopile generates a small voltage, and that voltage, routed through the wall switch or remote receiver, is what opens the main gas valve. When the fireplace ignores the switch, the usual suspects in order are a thermopile too worn to make enough voltage, dead batteries in the remote receiver, a corroded wall switch or its wiring, and only rarely the valve itself. It is one of the fastest diagnoses in the trade, because every link in that chain can be measured, and the fix is usually a single inexpensive part.
That haze is mineral and sulfur residue from normal combustion, baked onto the inside face of the glass a little more each season. Regular household glass cleaner will not touch it, and ammonia products should never be used on fireplace glass; a proper fireplace glass polish removes it, which is part of every cleaning we do. Two caveats. Film left cooking for many years can permanently etch the glass, at which point replacement is the honest fix. And any panel that comes off for cleaning needs its gasket checked before it goes back on, because a worn gasket on a sealed unit is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one.

It depends on how it ignites, and it is worth knowing before the next windstorm. Standing-pilot millivolt units, common in Walnut Grove-era homes and many older inserts, run entirely without electricity: the flame lights and heats, only the fan stays off, so the heat radiates instead of blowing. Electronic-ignition units need power to light, and most have a battery backup in the receiver that takes over during an outage, provided the batteries are fresh; we check and swap them during any service visit. On rural Township properties where outages tend to come with storms, a fireplace that lights without power is genuine backup heat, and confirming yours does takes two minutes during a cleaning.
