A boiler in a Port Moody home often runs two different heating systems at once. A 30-year-old cast-iron boiler is not a replacement just because of its age. Pilot assemblies, thermocouples, gas valves, pumps, and zone valves are all repairs, and a boiler of that generation repaired properly will run for years more. What ends the conversation is a heat exchanger that has cracked or is leaking. A combi boiler switches between heating the house and heating tap water, and when the tap-water side fails on its own, the switching is usually where the fault is. The diverter valve that sends hot water to one side or the other sticks, the flow sensor that signals a tap has opened stops reading, or the plate heat exchanger that heats the tap water has scaled up inside. It is common on the older cast-iron boilers in Port Moody, and it is usually a thermocouple, the small sensor that sits in the pilot flame and holds the gas valve open while the flame is lit.
